By Bill Cup
Troy – College students have a new option for employment in the Troy area this summer.
Andrew Smith, a 20-year-old sophomore at Ohio University, is the outlet manager for University Painters in Troy and Tipp City. He said the company that teaches students the finer points of painting a house, and is always looking for applicants for summer employment.
“The company offers students an opportunity to start a business,” Smith said. Available positions with University Painters include painter, crew foreman and outlet manager. Smith said the vice presidents of the company all began as painters.
“No experience is necessary to begin. All training is provided by the company,” Smith said. Training for the students begins with a full day of classroom training covering all aspects of interior and exterior training. From that point all training is done on the job site, Smith said.
The average residential exterior job takes about three to four crew members and a foreman and lasts about four days, Smith said.
Smith has been working in Miami County for the company for the past four years. University Painters headquarters are in Alexandria, VA. They now have franchises operating in 14 states primarily along the East Coast.
The company has painted more than 7,000 homes since 1986 he said.
Smith is giving written estimates by appointment.
“Our aim is to give a quality job as an affordable price,” Smith said. “Our reputation has been spreading. We have several good references from the work we have done.”
Smith said he expects to have four crews in place by this summer and there is room in the company for more local painting crews.
